The Public Finance Unit is responsible for the development, ongoing production and analysis of statistics related to the Government Finance Statistics, mainly the reporting of Malta’s Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) notification and the compilation and transmission of the non-financial, financial accounts and the debt of the General Government Sector, on an annual and quarterly basis, according to the European System of Accounts (ESA) 2010 and the Manual on Government Deficit and Debt.
Moreover, the Unit compiles Malta’s tax burden and the General Government expenditure by the classification of functions (COFOG). Malta’s statistical requirements emanating from the Council Directive 85/2011 are entrusted to the Public Finance Unit. The Unit compiles also the European System of the Social Protection Systems (ESSPROS) satellite account and the Research and Development indicators for the Government and Higher Education sectors.
